PingPilot’s checker
If you saw PingPilot/1.0 (+https://pingpilot.run/bot) in your logs, that’s PingPilot. It checks whether public websites are up, for their status pages on PingPilot.
What it does
- It asks for your homepage, and any app or API address it watches, with a plain request, like a visitor would. It never signs in, fills in forms or sends anything.
- When a product is first added, it also reads the homepage and up to two of its scripts, and tries a few likely addresses such as app. and api., to find the parts worth watching and what they run on.
- Products nobody has claimed are checked every 5 minutes. Owners choose how often for their own, down to every minute.
- Checks come from Cloudflare’s network. An outage is only called when checks from three regions agree.
Stopping it
- If it’s your product: claim it, free, at pingpilot.run, then pause any check or take the page down. Every check stops straight away.
- Or email me at hello@pingpilot.run from your domain, and I’ll take the page down and stop the checks.
It doesn’t read robots.txt: checking that a page answers isn’t crawling it, and it never follows links beyond what’s above.
